dc.description.sponsorshipThe aim of this study was to explore teachers‟ experiences with the generalist approach of teaching in selected primary schools of Chankhanga Zone in Kasungu District. The study involved thirty participants and it used the mixed methods design. However, the study tilted much towards the qualitative design. The study was guided by the General Teaching Theory. Structured questionnaires were used to collect quantitative data while semistructured interviews were used to collect qualitative data. Quantitative data was analysed using a descriptive approach while qualitative data was transcribed and analysed using Tesch‟s open coding approach. The study revealed that teachers in the primary schools under study were not well prepared during training to teach as generalists. The teachers reported having competence in teaching most of the curriculum subjects except Religious Studies and Expressive Arts. The study also established that with the generalist approach of teaching, teachers are exposed to a wide range of knowledge, they have the capacity to handle all curriculum subjects and they can easily integrate knowledge across the curriculum. The study found out that the major challenge of the approach is lack of in-depth knowledge of all the curriculum subjects. The other challenges are high workload for teachers and lack of consideration for teachers‟ individual differences. The findings also revealed that teachers in the primary schools under study were not comfortable with the generalist approach of teaching. Teachers therefore opted for the adoption of the specialist approach of teaching in primary schools. The study concludes by making recommendations to stake holders in education.en_US
