Kinship networks’ role on rural households’ food security in Chipuka extension planning area, Ntchisi district

Abstract

Kinship networks are widely recognized for promoting collectivism and reciprocity; however, their specific role in sustaining rural households' food security has received limited scholarly attention. This study assessed the contribution of kinship networks to rural households’ food security by establishing their role in food availability, examining their contribution to food accessibility, and evaluating their influence on food stability. A mixed-method design was employed, where a survey of 231 household heads and three focus group discussions were conducted. Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis were used to understand and gain an in-depth knowledge on the role that kinship networks play on rural household’s food security. The findings revealed that kinship networks are crucial as they contribute to food production, acquisition, and recovery processes, making food available and accessible through direct food provision and income generation. Majority of households rely on their kinship networks as primary sources of food and support during food shortages and they also influence food stability by providing recovery mechanisms during periods of food scarcity. The results emphasize that kinship networks function as informal yet effective social safety nets that mitigate food insecurity risks in rural settings. Development programs should recognize and harness kinship networks as key social capital assets that sustain food security. Strengthening these networks can improve community resilience by ensuring timely support during food crises, reducing the need for external aid. Formalize the role of kinship networks in local food security planning and disaster response frameworks, incorporating them as partners in community-based monitoring and support systems.
